Tax Return for Workers from Abroad: Getting Money Back?
Many employees overpay income tax without knowing it. A tax return can be worth it.
Why file a return?
Wage tax is deducted from pay, often based on flat assumptions. A tax return calculates the tax precisely. The result can be a refund.
Who can file?
In principle anyone who had income in Germany. How your tax liability is classified depends, among other things, on residence and length of stay. If in doubt, get advice.
What to have ready
- Tax identification number.
- Wage tax statement (Lohnsteuerbescheinigung) from your employer.
- Proof of costs, for example travel, workwear or double household costs.
Deadlines
Voluntary filing is generally possible up to four years back. Those obliged to file have fixed deadlines.
Advice
Help is offered by wage tax assistance associations and tax advisers. Ask about costs before you commission anyone.
FAQ
Will I definitely get money back?
Not definitely. It depends on your income, costs and tax status.
Where do I get the wage tax statement?
From your employer, usually after year end.
Do I need to speak German?
Not necessarily. Advice centres often help in several languages.
