Wage Payment in Germany: When Is It Paid and Can You Get an Advance?

Especially at the start of a new job you want to know when the first money arrives. Here you learn when wages are due, how an advance works and what helps if payment is late.

When are wages due?

The employer must pay wages at the time set out in the employment or collective agreement. Payment at the end of the month or in the first half of the following month is common. Without an agreement, wages only become due after the work has been done. For the statutory minimum wage the rule is: it must be paid by the last banking day of the month following the month in which the work was done.

Do I get an advance?

There is generally no entitlement to an advance unless one is agreed. Many employers offer a part payment for seasonal work or short assignments, for example after the first week. Ask about it before you start and get the arrangement in writing. Keep in mind that an advance is deducted from your wages later.

How is it paid?

As a rule, the employer transfers your wages to your bank account. For that you need bank details, ideally an account in Germany or in the SEPA area. Cash payment is possible, but you should have the payment acknowledged with a receipt.

Payslip

You are entitled to a statement in text form showing gross and net pay, deductions and surcharges. How to read it is explained in the article on the payslip. Check that hours, the €12 minimum wage and surcharges are correct.

Deductions for accommodation and meals

If accommodation is deducted from wages, it must be in the contract and stay within permitted limits. More in the article on accommodation at work.

If your pay does not arrive

  1. Check your contract and statement and note your hours.
  2. Ask the employer in writing and set a deadline.
  3. Note cut-off periods in the contract by which claims must be made.
  4. Get advice from an advice centre or a lawyer.
