Winter in Your Housing: Heating, Airing and Saving Energy Properly

Winter is coming and energy is expensive. A few simple habits keep your housing warm, dry and economical, without freezing.

Why saving energy matters this winter

Energy prices in Germany rose sharply in 2022, and since September temporary energy-saving rules apply, for example for public buildings and workplaces. It is also worth heating deliberately in housing. At the same time the housing must stay habitable, which includes a working heating system. General requirements for housing are described in Housing While Working in Germany.

Heating properly

  • Heat all rooms in use evenly but not excessively. Around 19 to 20 degrees in the living area is enough for many people.
  • Do not block radiators with furniture and do not hang towels over them.
  • Turn the heating down at night or when you are out, but not completely off, so the walls do not cool down.
  • Close doors to cooler rooms.

Airing properly

Air several times a day, briefly and vigorously, about five minutes with windows wide open, ideally cross-ventilating. Leaving windows tilted all the time wastes energy and cools the walls. If possible do not dry laundry in the bedroom and air after showering and cooking.

Avoiding mould

Mould develops with too high humidity and cold walls. Place furniture with a little space from the outer wall, air regularly and report damp spots early. Do not remove larger mould yourself.

More saving ideas

  • Shower shorter and use hot water sparingly
  • Switch off devices instead of leaving them on standby
  • Lights only when needed
  • Use a kettle instead of a pot where suitable
  • Agree rules with your roommates so everyone takes part

Report problems

If the heating fails, windows do not close or it is damp, report it immediately to your contact person or landlord and document it with photos. For billing it matters who bears the utility costs. Ask about it and get it confirmed in writing.

Checklist

  1. Heating works and is not blocked
  2. Air briefly several times a day
  3. Report damp spots early
  4. Use hot water and electricity sparingly
  5. Utility costs clarified in writing
