Winter on Site: Clothing and Holidays Away from Home
Winter brings cold, darkness and, for many, homesickness. Good clothing and a little planning make it easier.
Dress properly
- Several thin layers are better than one thick sweater.
- Functional underwear that wicks moisture away.
- Waterproof, non-slip safety shoes with warm socks.
- A hat under the helmet, gloves with good grip.
Safety in the cold
Surfaces can be slippery in frost. Report icy scaffolds, ladders and paths. Breaks to warm up are allowed and important; your employer must provide protection from the weather.
Holidays away from home
Christmas and New Year can be hard when your family is far away. Plan early whether you travel home or work. Agree leave and travel with your employer in good time.
Stay in touch
Video calls, a parcel sent home or a shared meal with colleagues help against homesickness.
FAQ
Who provides winter clothing?
We agree workwear and protective clothing with you before the assignment.
May I refuse to work in severe frost?
Not as a blanket rule. If there is danger, talk to your supervisor immediately; protective measures are the employer’s duty.
Will I get time off over the holidays?
It depends on the assignment. Talk to us and the company early.
