Grape Harvest and Autumn Crops: Plan Your Helpers in Time

In many regions the grape harvest starts as early as the end of August, followed by apples, pumpkins and other autumn crops. Plan now and you will have enough hands at the peak.

Why the autumn harvest needs especially careful planning

The harvest date depends on ripeness and weather and can often be fixed only a few days ahead. Especially with hand picking, for example on steep slopes or for high-quality wines, a farm needs many experienced workers within a short time. At the same time apples, plums and other crops run in parallel.

Typical tasks in the grape harvest

  • Cut grapes by hand and collect them in crates
  • Sort, so that only healthy grapes reach the press
  • Transport to collection points and to the winery
  • Support work in the cellar and in processing

Three models of deployment

Whether direct hiring, temporary agency work or a contract for work fits depends on the farm. A contract for work can make sense if a clearly defined result is owed, such as picking specific plots. How the models differ is explained in Contract for work vs. temporary agency work. What to watch for in drawing the line is in the checklist on sham contracts for work.

Minimum wage rises to €12

The minimum wage is currently €10.45 gross per hour. On 1 October 2022 it rises to €12. This also affects the late harvest in October, so calculate costs accordingly. Working hours must be recorded. For short-term employment the limit of three months or 70 working days a year remains.

Contracts, housing and organisation

Since 1 August 2022 extended documentation duties apply to employment contracts, including for seasonal workers. Details in Nachweisgesetz 2022. For helpers from elsewhere you need proper housing, catering options and clear agreements on hours and breaks.

Checklist: securing the autumn harvest

  1. Estimate the harvest window and peak weeks realistically
  2. Set the number of helpers per week
  3. Choose a model and prepare contracts under the Nachweisgesetz
  4. Budget for the minimum wage from 1 October
  5. Clarify housing, travel and induction
  6. Have a backup plan for rainy days and absences
