House Rules in Your Accommodation: Living Together Without Conflict
If you live in accommodation provided by your employer, you share rooms with colleagues and live next to neighbours. House rules help prevent conflict. Here are typical rules and practical tips.
Why there are house rules
In Germany, rules for living together are common, especially in shared rooms and communal accommodation. The house rules (Hausordnung) set out what is allowed and what is not. Read them on the first day and ask if anything is unclear.
Quiet hours
Night quiet usually applies from 10 pm to 6 am. Many houses also have a midday quiet period. During these times keep music, conversations and phone calls low. Also follow your neighbours’ rules. You can show consideration for shift workers by closing doors quietly.
Cleanliness and shared rooms
You share the kitchen, bathroom and hallway with others. Tidy up after use, wash dishes and keep floors and sanitary areas clean. There is often a cleaning rota. Keep food in closed containers and in the fridge.
Waste separation
In Germany waste is separated: paper, organic waste, packaging (yellow bag or yellow bin), glass and general waste. Deposit bottles are returned at the supermarket. Ask about collection days and bin locations.
Fire safety
Smoking is usually banned inside buildings. Candles, heaters and cooking in the room can be a fire hazard. Know the escape route and where the fire extinguishers are. The emergency number is 112. More on winter topics in the article on heating and saving energy in accommodation.
Visitors and pets
Visits are often allowed only at certain times or by arrangement. Pets are usually not allowed in shared accommodation. Ask.
Report damage
Report broken appliances, water damage or broken locks to your contact person immediately. That way you avoid bigger damage and arguments about costs.
What you can do
- Read the house rules and follow them.
- Talk to roommates calmly and early about problems.
- If conflicts arise, turn to your contact person.
