For workers
Sick at work in Germany: what to do and what you are entitled to
Fever, back pain, an accident: anyone who falls ill should know what to do. Here are the key rules on reporting sick, the doctor’s note and continued pay.
Report immediately
Inform your employer without delay — on the first day of illness before work starts, by phone or message. Say how long you expect to be off.
The sick note (AU)
- If the illness lasts longer than three calendar days, you need a doctor’s certificate on the fourth day. Your employer may ask for it earlier.
- Since 2023 the doctor sends the data electronically to the health fund; the employer retrieves it. You still have to report sick on time and see a doctor.
- Take your insurance card with you.
Continued pay
After four weeks of employment, your employer continues to pay your wage for up to six weeks of illness. After that, sickness benefit from the health fund may follow.
Workplace accident
For an accident at work or on the way there, the statutory accident insurance (BG) pays. Report the accident to your supervisor at once and have it documented.
If you are insured abroad
Check beforehand that your insurance is valid in Germany. Without valid cover, high costs can arise.
Your conduct
- Stay at home if you are contagious, especially in hospitality and kitchens.
- Follow the doctor’s instructions.
- Dismissal because of illness is only allowed under narrow conditions.
Conclusion
Report, get the note, keep it. Then you are on the safe side.
