Documents for Working in Germany 2026: The Overview
With complete documents you start faster. Here are the key papers at a glance.
Basics
- a valid passport or ID;
- residence permit or proof of the right to work, for example protection status under §24 AufenthG;
- registration certificate (your address in Germany).
For employment
- tax identification number (Steuer-ID);
- social security number if you have one (otherwise it is issued at registration);
- health insurance, compulsory by law;
- bank details (IBAN) for wage payment.
Proof of qualifications
Certificates, references or driving licences when relevant to the job. With translation if needed.
